What is broadband?
Simply put, the term ‘broadband’ refers to Internet access that is faster than 56K dialup. The term broadband refers to any type of transmission technique that carries multiple voice, video or data channels simultaneously over a common wire. It is a large pipeline (much bigger than a dial-up connection) that brings information to your home. In this instance, broadband refers to high-speed Internet access using this transmission technique. The Oregon Wireless premium service supports download speeds of up to 15Mbps.

Is broadband Internet service the same as high-speed Internet service?
Broadband and high-speed are interchangeable terms used to refer to the capacity of the Internet connection you are using.

How does broadband work?
Broadband Internet connects your computer to the Internet via a high-speed modem and a fiber-optic cable network.

Why should I get broadband service?
Broadband Internet allows you fast, unfettered access to the Internet superhighway.  You get:

• An always-on connection – no busy signals, dial-up frustrations, or contention for your home phone line
• Blazing speed for entertainment, shopping, social networking or business
• Fast video and music downloads.  Enjoy iTunes, NetFlix and the many other on-line media services without long waits.

What types of broadband service are there?

• • Wireless Broadband — The Internet service provided by Oregon Wireless.  The ideal solution for rural areas in that a single tower can provide broadband service to many households in a large radius.  Requires only a radio modem and small antenna mounted to your home.
  • Cable or Cable Modem – The Internet service provided by a cable company. The Internet connection is provided on the same type of cable that you plug into your television for Cable TV service.

Cable broadband is typically not available in rural areas.

• DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) – Transforms copper telephone lines into carriers of digital data. DSL uses the same copper wires that carry voice traffic to your telephone to carry high-speed data.  DSL is typically provided by telephone companies and is only available in cities.
• Satellite – One-way high-speed Internet technology that uses satellites orbiting the Earth to transmit data downstream through a satellite dish attached to your home.  The technology is similar to Satellite TV and may require a Satellite TV contract.  Satellite service is typically not a good choice for business as the uplink speed is very slow.

How long does it take to install a broadband connection in a home?
Less than an hour, depending on what kind of internal cabling is required.

Virtually any modern computer will work:

Processor Speed: 300 MHz or higher
Memory: 128MB 
Hard Drive Space: 150 MB of available space

How do I pay for my Internet service?
You can be billed directly by Oregon Wireless monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.  It’s your choice.  We accept checks or can bill your credit card automatically.

What is the set up fee?
This is a one-time setup/connection fee of $149 which is entirely waived if you pay for 12 months at the time of installation.

Is there any equipment cost?
There is no equipment cost charged by Oregon Wireless.  Oregon Wireless, Inc. retains ownership of the wireless access equipment that is installed.  You may choose to purchase internal LAN equipment (wireless router, cabling, etc.) from a retailer in order to complete your network.

What are IP addresses and how are they assigned?
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number assigned to your computer by your service provider. Most users will have private, static IP addresses and will not need to be concerned with their IP address.  Some users will need public, static IP addresses and these needs can be accommodated at a small additional cost.
